The Indianapolis Marion County Public Library:
A Dynix Success Story

The Indianapolis Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) serves over one million people and boasts a collection of 750,000 items. With an annual circulation of 10 million items and roughly 30,000 holds placed each year, IMCPL's old mainframe system simply could not meet the demands that were being placed on it.

After a two-year search for a new system, IMCPL chose to replace the mainframe with Horizon. Horizon provided the library with the functionality it required as well as dramatic increases in efficiency. Previously, the process of acquiring new books and getting them to the shelves took nearly six months; now, with Horizon, IMCPL can order and process books in about three weeks.

In addition, patron services are much improved. Patrons now enjoy easy access to the entire collection as well the power to perform many library tasks through Horizon Information Portal.

IMCPL's Debra Champ, Technology and Information Services Area Director, notes that lines at the circulation desk have been reduced, and "the only time [patrons] have to come into the library is to pick up or return a book."
